Hainan Museum is the only comprehensive historical and artistic museum in Hainan province, and in 2012 was named a national first-grade museum. Although known as the Hainan Museum since 1984, it was not formally established by the Hainan government under that name until 1990. In 1996, the Hainan Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology was established.
