Tourism has been identified as the top priority among Hainan's 12 preferential industries.

As the only tropical province in China, Hainan is blessed with a charming tropical island landscape and a pleasant climate, contributing to its unique folklore and culture. It is known as a Chinese all-season garden and a holiday resort for the nation.

On the premise of protecting the ecological environment, the province focuses on the development of marine tourism, medical tourism, shopping tourism, convention and exhibition tourism, sport tourism, rural tourism, forest tourism, RV camping tourism and characteristic urban tourism.

Hainan is home to six provincial-level tourism scenic areas, namely Guanlan Lake in Haikou, Haitang Bay National Coast in Sanya, the cruise home-port in Sanya, Ocean Flower Island in Danzhou, Lingshui Qingshui Bay and the Marine Tourism Zone in Sansha.

Nine mature coastal tourist resorts, Sanya's Sanya Bay, Dadonghai Sea, Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay; Lingshui's Qingshui Bay; Wanning's Shimei Bay and Shenzhou Peninsula; Qionghai's Bo'ao Bay, and Haikou's West Coast, have been put into use. Efforts are being made to speed up the construction of 25 key tourist resorts, including Yalong Bay National Tourist Resort in Sanya and Tongguling International Eco-tourism Zone in Wenchang.

There are two international airports and five ports in Hainan. Tourism related public facilities, including roads, the power supply, drinking water, tourist centers, travel service centers, toilets, tourism signs and WiFi coverage have all seen great improvements in recent years.

Hainan accommodated 67.45 million tourists in 2017, including about 1.12 million inbound tourists. There are a total of 4,094 restaurants and accommodation facilities, with the number of available guest rooms exceeding 255,700. There are also a total of 157 5-star hotels in Hainan, with the number of available guest rooms exceeding 50,000.
