On May 1, 1950, Hainan was liberated and the Hainan administrative region was formed under the jurisdiction of Guangdong province. On April 13, 1988, Hainan province was established and became China's largest special economic zone.
Over the 70 years since its liberation, especially after the island province became a special economic zone, Hainan's civil aviation industry has seen tremendous changes, which can be easily seen from the founding of HNA Group and the building of airports in Haikou, Sanya, and Qionghai.
