After more than 500 days of construction work, the Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of Hainan University (HNU), whose former name was Sanya Nanfan Seed Industry Science and Technology Mass Innovation Center, has been successfully completed and handed over to its new owner.
The project includes a 10-storey office building, a 6-storey experimental building, some 3-storey buildings and a basement. It has a construction area of 46,000 square meters and costs 322 million yuan ($50 million).
During the Spring Festival holiday, workers and managers gave up reunions with their families to work on the construction site, said Zhou Wei, a project manager at China Construction Third Engineering Bureau. The workers expressed their feeling of pride and excitement as participants in the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port.
As a key project of both Hainan province and Sanya city, Sanya Nanfan Research Institute of HNU is committed to becoming a national strategic scientific research force in the tropical agriculture field. Meanwhile, the project will serve as the core base for seed production, breeding and research led by HNU. It will improve scientific innovation in the seed industry and the commercial application of their achievements.
More than 60 percent of Hainan's population belongs to rural areas and 80 percent of the land belongs to rural areas, thus HNU established the School of Agriculture and Rural Affairs to cultivate applied talents in agriculture, rural industries and farming. In the future, HNU and South Nanfan Base will together provide a world-class services for the whole country.
