Hainan-Hong Kong underwater optical cable put into use

The first underwater optical cable to connect South China's Hainan with Hong Kong was put into use on June 29 following the successful completion of its debugging work, according to its creator, China Mobile Hainan Branch.

The cable links Hainan's northeastern county of Wenchang to Chung Hom Kok in southern Hong Kong Island. It is the first of its kind between Hainan and Hong Kong. It acts as a direct communications connection between the two places, and is expected to promote the efficient flow of data and information to and from Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP).

According to current plans, China Mobile is also set to construct international infrastructure such as an international underwater cable landing station, an international business department, and an FTP data center.

These projects will also help Chinese-funded companies in Belt and Road Initiative countries to "go global", and will meet the development needs of international data communications in countries along the Maritime Silk Road.

In the future, China Mobile Hainan Branch will continue to take advantage of the opportunities brought by the Hainan FTP's construction, make full use of information technology, increase the construction of new infrastructure and information projects such as 5G networks and data centers, and promote the development of cross-border data flow and data trading.

It will help form an industry cluster in Hainan, helping Hainan become a leading global information exchange center in the Asia-Pacific region.
