By the end of June this year, Hainan has completed the standardized construction of foreign language signs in public places throughout the province, making it the first province in China to standardize foreign language signs at the provincial level.

Since April last year, the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province promoted the province's cities and counties to carry out the foreign language sign standardization work in key areas spanning transportation, travel, education, health care, and urban and rural public service facilities.

Since the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port, Hainan has attracted more international attention. More and more foreigners come to Hainan for investment, study, and travel, requiring Hainan to create an international language environment, said Wang Sheng, director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Hainan Province.

Hainan has divided the province's cities and counties into two batches in order to efficiently complete the standardized construction of foreign language signs.

The first batch of cities and counties, which include Haikou, Sanya, Danzhou, Qionghai, Wenchang, Wanning, Lingshui and Baoting, have completed the work at the end of 2020. The second batch of the other 10 cities and counties, which include Ding'an, Tunchang, Baisha, Dongfang, Ledong, Wuzhishan, Changjiang, Qiongzhong, Lin'gao, and the Chengmai Yangpu Economic Development Zone completed the work at the end of this June.

Wang said that the standard foreign language signs have enhanced the quality and image of Hainan province's cities and counties, improved Hainan's cultural and international language environment, as well as enhanced the internationalization and facilitation of the business environment of Hainan FTP.
