The Chinese team claimed the gold medal in the Mixed Gender Team Taekwondo Competition at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games on July 27. Gao Pan, who is from Hainan, became the first athlete from the island province to help his team clinch an Olympic gold medal.

The Mixed Gender Team Taekwondo Competition is a new competitive format that is held alongside regular events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games for the first time. Although its medals are not included in the Olympics medal count as of now, it is very likely to become an official Olympic event in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The 26-year-old Gao claimed the bronze in the women's over 67 kilogram at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games and got the first place in both the mixed doubles event at the World Taekwondo World Cup Team Championships and in the women's below 67 kg at the World Taekwondo President's Cup in 2019.
