Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park has been selected into the first group of China's national parks, according to the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity on Tuesday.
The first group of national parks includes Sanjiangyuan, Giant Panda, Northeast China Tiger and Leopard, Hainan Tropical Rainforest and Wuyi Mountain.
National parks protect representative natural ecosystems throughout the nation, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration said. The parks are areas with the most unique natural landscapes, the best natural heritage and have the richest biodiversity.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is located in the central part of Hainan province, covers an area of 4,269 square kilometers, spans nine cities and counties in central Hainan Island, and contains more than 95 percent of original forest and more than 55 percent of the natural forests on Hainan Island.
It preserves the most complete and diverse continental island tropical rainforest in China, and it is an important part of the world's tropical rainforests. Hainan is the only place where its native gibbons can be found in the world. The biodiversity index is equivalent to that of the Amazon tropical rainforest, and it is a global biodiversity hotspot.
