Haikou Meilan International Airport held an exercise on Nov 6 to test out the operation of its second phase and prepare for the start of formal operations on Dec 2.

The exercise simulated a total of 40 inbound and outbound flights, and included more than 3,400 employees from the airport, their family members, and volunteers, who acted as passengers, as well as 2,000 pieces of simulated luggage and two real aircraft provided by Hainan Airlines and China Southern Airlines.

Each participating passenger was able to put forward opinions according to their experience after the simulation process was completed.

With the aims of building a world-class airport and creating an air gateway for Hainan Free Trade Port, the second phase of Haikou Meilan International Airport was constructed according to the comprehensive transportation plan of Hainan province during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25).

The newly-built Terminal 2 of the airport covers an area of approximately 300,000 square meters, with a total of five check-in islands, 110 check-in counters, 40 security check channels, 57 boarding gates, and a 10,000 sq-m duty-free business area.

After it is put into use, the second phase is expected to accommodate an annual passenger throughput of 35 million passengers and an annual cargo and mail throughput of 400,000 metric tons by 2025.
