The Symposium on Global Maritime Cooperation and Ocean Governance 2021 will be held in Sanya, South China's Hainan province between Nov 9 and 10, according to a media briefing in Beijing on Nov 3.

This symposium is hosted by the National Institute for South China Sea Studies (NISCS) and the China-Southeast Asia Research Center on the South China Sea (CSARC), and it will be held both online and on-site.

It will bring the audience together with over 800 participants, including representatives of international organizations, officials from marine-related government departments and eminent experts and scholars from marine-related research institutes around the world.

Wu Shicun, the founding president of the NISCS, said that in terms of ocean governance systems, the current conflicts and disputes between countries surrounding maritime delimitation, territorial sovereignty and maritime rights, and the use of sea lanes have seriously endangered the global maritime order.

In this context, the forum will send a voice from countries around the South China Sea, and provide experience and solutions for global maritime governance.

Wu introduced that the forum aims to offer an international platform for thought-provoking dialogues and promote academic research and exchanges on maritime cooperation and ocean governance.

The participants will discuss certain issues such as Opportunities and Challenges to Global Ocean Governance, Reframe a Security Architecture in the South China Sea and Blue Economy and Sustainable Ocean Development.
