Danzhou Zongzi, also known as rice dumplings, has a long history that can be traced back to the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220). It is a Danzhou specialty in Hainan province, a national geographical indication protected product, and a municipal intangible cultural heritage item. It has a large number of varieties and uses ingredients that are abundant in the province. It's estimated that an average of 30 million rice dumplings are sold annually, generating 360 million yuan ($56.7 million) in sales volume.
