Lingshui hosts first festival celebrating fishing culture

Lingshui Li autonomous county in Hainan held its first cultural festival on Aug 15 which themes around the Danjia, a group of people who have lived off the sea for generations - and have even taken their boats as dwellings.

Held at the central fishing port of Lingshui New Village, the event was comprised of seven parts such as exhibitions of Danjia local delicacies and handicrafts as well as various folk activities.

Chen Guanghai, deputy director of the Hainan Provincial Intangible Heritage Protection Center, said that Lingshui was actively developing products with local characteristics by combining its cultural resources and geographical advantages.

The Danjia cultural festival provides visitors with a variety of unique experiences and builds a distinctive brand, ensuring the sustainable spread of culture, said Chen.

He added that the event, which is also a platform for cultural exchanges, revitalizes Danjia culture and helps develop local specialties and build a cultural brand, laying a solid foundation for further making the area into a draw for international tourism.
